Calla Lily Candle Holder Cake

Step By Step Video


Ingredients:

  • Fondant and Gum Paste Mix (White, Yellow and Green)web-IMG_6221
  • Heart Shape Cutter (Large, Medium and Small)
  • Round Shape Cutter (Large and Medium)
  • Border Cutter
  • Calla Lily Leaf Cutter
  • Cake Spike (fresh flower)
  • Thin Foam
  • Calla Lily Former, Paper cone
  • Paint Brush
  • Ball Tool
  • Floral Wire (18 and 16 Gauge)
  • Rolling Pin
  • Board
  • White Vegetable Shortening
  • Gum Paste Glue
  • Dusting Pouch
  • Facial Tissue
  • Yellow Colored Sugar
  • Spatula

Directions:

Step 1: Apply a thin coat of vegetable shortening on the board surface and rolling pin. Knead the white fondant until smooth and pliable.
Step 2: Roll out white fondant 1/8 inch thick and cut three large heart cut-outs. Dust the thin foam and smooth the edges with large end of the ball tool.
Step 3: Dust the paper cone and heart cut-out with dusting pouch to avoid sticking. Wrap the heart cut-out overlapping with indented end of petal towards the pointed end of the former or paper cone.
Step 4: Brush the inside of the overlapping side and secure the cut-out in position.
Step 5: Gently furl the edge of overlapping petal and sides all the way around the paper cone. Insert facial tissue to hold the furl in place and set it aside to dry.
Step 6: Roll out fondant 1/16th inch thick. Repeat the above process for large – 2, medium – 3 and small – 3 calla lily flowers and use calla lily former for them to dry on.

Center:

Large Candle Holder:

Step 1: Take white fondant and roll it into a ball. Gently shape it into a cone shape with one side flat on your palm.
Step 2: Insert floral wire dipped in gum paste glue. Place it on a dusted surface with flat side on it to dry with support in the back to hold the shape.

Large:
Step 1: Take yellow fondant and shape it into a ball. Gently shape in into an elongated shape in the front and pinch the bottom into a small cone shape.
Step 2: Dip the floral wire in gum paste glue and insert into the center.
Step 3: Brush the elongated shape with gum paste glue and roll in yellow colored sugar.
Step 4: Hang it on a wire rack to dry.

Medium and Small:
Step 1: Take yellow fondant and shape it into a ball. Gently shape in into a tear drop shape.
Step 2: Dip the floral wire in gum paste glue and insert into the center.
Step 3: Brush the tear drop shape with gum paste glue and roll in yellow colored sugar.
Step 4: Hang it on a wire rack to dry.

Calyx:

Large Candle Holder:

Step 1: Roll out small amount of green fondant less than 1/16th inch thick.
Step 2: Use large and medium round cutter to make: total of 2 large cut-outs and 4 medium cut-outs.
Step 3: Cut the circle in half for large candle holder 3, large 2, and medium 3 calla lilies.
Step 4: Cut the circle in half and cut a strip to make small 3 calyxes for small calla lilies.
Step 5: Apply a thin coat of glue and wrap it around the Calla Lily Base and press gently to attach.
Step 6: The overlap of the calyx line up with the overlap of flower.

Assembling Calla Lily Flower:

Step 1: Brush the inside of the flower and bottom of the center with glue.
Step 2: Insert the wire center in place and set it aside to dry.
Step 3: Repeat with all the calla lily flowers.
Step 4: Brush the inside of the calla lily candle holder flower and cone shape center with glue. Step 5: Insert the wire and center in place and set it aside to dry.

Leaves:

Step 1: Roll out green fondant 1/8th inch thick and cut 7 leaf cut-outs.
Step 2: Dip the floral wire in glue and insert it into the leaf cut-out.
Step 3: Dust the thin foam and thin the edges using large end of the ball tool.
Step 4: Set aside to dry on dusted flower former.

Painting the Flower and Leaves:

Step 1: For realistic look, paint the flowers with sliver Pearl Dust mixed with vanilla extract.
Step 2: Brush the green Pearl Dust at the beginning of calyx and the tip of the flower.
Step 3: Brush some yellow on the inside to the candle holder only.
Step 4: Paint the calyx and leaves with green Pearl Dust mixed with vanilla extract.
Step 5: Set them aside to dry.

Floral Sprigs:

Step 1: Take small flowers and leaf start wrapping the floral tape around it tight.
Step 2: Keep adding larger flowers and leaf in between and continue wrapping floral tape real tight.
Step 3: Make two separate sprigs, one large and one small.

Boarder:

Step 1: Roll out white fondant 1/16th inch thick and cut-out boarders using boarder cutter.
Step 2: Cut straight cut-outs around the boarder cutter.
Step 3: Brush the inside of the cut-outs with glue and stick them in place around the cake.
Step 4: Tie a green ribbon around the boarder and make a bow on the side.

Final Assembly:

Step 1: Insert the Candle Holder into the cake spikes and insert them into place on the cake.
Step 2: Place the Floral sprig in place one on top and one near the bow. Attach the sprig with thin-out fondant in a piping bag.
Step 3: Cut off excess floral wire hanging in the back.
Step 4: Place lighted LED-candles in place or tea candles as per preference.
